We regularly introduce new songs to you here at C3 Church Wellington but instead of just surprising you with them on Sunday, we want to share them with you in advance so that you can add them to your playlists, get to know them, and really understand the heart behind us adding them to our Sunday setlists. And with that, we’re so excited to introduce to you our latest setlist addition!

Fill This Place by Red Rocks Worship.

Fill This Place was written by Red Rocks Worship and released in 2017 as part of their Here album. We love the sense of surrender in this song and we can’t wait to share it with you on Sunday!

Unpacking the Song

Fill this place is a declaration of the freedom we have in Jesus Christ and our response of worship to him.

The song opens with a declaration of his light, hope and peace in our lives and quickly moves into an expression of our worship to him. “Father we are on our knees” symbolises our need for Jesus, but more than that it symbolises our voluntary submission to him.

We submit to him, because he has saved us from death. Before Jesus came, we were bound to our sinful nature and unable to please God. “There is a love that overcame the grave” speaks of Jesus love for us, that he would die for us and in doing so, pay the ultimate price for our sin. His blood would be the covering for our past, current and future sin. Now we can be free from punishment for this sin, which is death, and more than that we have victory over our sinful nature. Romans 7: 18 - 25 speaks of our struggle with our sinful nature and desire to do what is good but inability to carry it out.

“And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it…. Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The song acknowledges our need for Jesus and the Holy Spirit (who is our comforter) so that we can overcome our sinful nature. It finishes by declaring our response will always be to worship Him. To worship is to lay down our lives, and live a life of obedience and love for Jesus Christ.

Our prayer

We can all identify a time in our lives we have struggled with our sinful nature. Perhaps that time is right now.  The human reaction to making mistakes is to feel guilt and shame. But Jesus came so that we may live life to the full. He doesn’t want us to live in guilt or shame.  Our prayer is that we would always remember the freedom Jesus has bought for us. Instead of living in shame or striving to be perfect, we pray that we would accept the freedom that Jesus has for us, to worship him, and let his Holy Spirit fill our hearts and change us from the inside out.

Lyrics

There is a light that burns in the darkness
There is a hope that washes the fear away
There is a peace that settles around us
It is Your love that sets our hearts ablaze
There is a light that burns in the darkness
There is a hope that washes the fear away
There is a peace that settles around us
It is Your love that sets our hearts ablaze

Father we're on our knees
With every heartbeat
We bring You this offering
Lord come and fill this place
Father we're crying out
Spirit we need You now
Glorious love surrounds us
Lord come and fill this place

There is a King that reigns in victory
There is a mercy strong enough to save
We feel it rising up from the ashes
There is a love that overcame the grave
There is a love that overcame the grave!

And I will worship You
I will worship You
I will worship You always
