This Sunday we continued our ‘Picture This’ series: "Oh the places we will go: imagine it, picture it, capture it & run with it, together.” Ps Steve shared with us part two of C3 Church Wellington’s vision, direction and purpose and we’re so excited to share it with you now.
Last week we heard the story of Nehemiah, an Israelite in captivity. As cupbearer to the King, Nehemiah was in a trusted position, bringing drinks to the King and spending time in his presence. During this time, Nehemiah heard about the trouble in Jerusalem and he was burdened; he wept, prayed and fasted before his God of heaven.
Here’s what we learnt last week from Nehemiah’s story:
Nehemiah waited four months where he was burdened by the fact that his home city is in ruins and because he was under captivity, there was absolutely nothing he can do about it. Passion is defined by the means to suffer. Nehemiah was so passionate about the need to rebuild his city that he suffered for four months and and so all he did in that time was pray, weep, and fast.
LETTERS FROM THE KING
When the King saw and heard of Nehemiah’s turmoil, Nehemiah asked him for letters, so that he may have access to all of the resources that he may require to rebuild the wall in Jerusalem. We too have been given letters from the King. God has provided us with the authority to go and fulfill the calling He has given to us.
Now let’s kick in to this week’s learnings!
LET US RISE AND BUILD
And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words
that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened
their hands for the good work. [Nehemiah 2:18]
Just as Nehemiah told of the vision that God had given to him and shared his passion and burden for his City, Pastor Steve shared C3 Church’s vision for the future and where our passions lie.
We have a vision and a goal of four churches within the Wellington region; of our brand new coffee cart blessing young people across university and college campuses across the city; and of opening doors across the world with a launch school, teaching, equipping and releasing others to launch churches worldwide.
To do these and more, we need a team of leaders, pastors, church planters, youth pastors, counselors, social workers, kids church leaders, worship leaders, musicians, business leaders, workplace missionaries and more.
We see church as a garden where you are planted and grow.
The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. [Psalms 92:12-13]
In Nehemiah’s vision, they said ‘“Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for good work.’ The wall wouldn’t build itself; every person needed to play their part and they did - more than 50 people and households are named, plus many groups helped to rebuild the wall. Here are some who stood out.
Next to them Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, goldsmiths, repaired. Next to him Hananiah, one of
the perfumers , repaired, and they restored as far as the Broad Wall. [Nehemiah 3:8]
Goldsmiths and perfumers were building the wall next to each other. Neither of these were builders, equipped to build a wall, but they caught the vision, got on board and worked together to see the vision fulfilled.
Next to him Shallum the son of Hallohesh, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, repaired, he
and his daughters. [Nehemiah 8:13]
Shallum and his daughters also played their part and the ladies got in on the action. We need Godly women to rise up and build the house of God!
And next to them the Tekoites repaired, but their nobles would not stoop to serve their Lord. [Nehemiah 3:5]
Some people would not “stoop” to serve the Lord. When Jesus came, it was beyond Him to stoop. In Matthew 20:28, Jesus said that even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom to many. If you’re too big to serve, you’re too small to lead.
Live happily together in a spirit of harmony, and be as mindful of another’s worth as you are your
own. Don’t live with a lofty mindset, thinking you are too important to serve others, but be willing
to do menial tasks and identify with those who are humble minded . Don’t be smug or even
think for a moment that you know it all. [Romans 12:16]
Malchijah the son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem , repaired the Dung Gate. Shallum the son of Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah , repaired the Fountain Gate. After him Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, ruler of half the district of Beth-zur , repaired to a point
opposite the tombs of David [ Nehemiah 3:14-16]
Even the rulers picked up their tools and built with their community.
Together, with everyone playing their part, they saw the vision come to pass. Together, unified by vision and purpose, they rose and built. Let us rise and build.
SWORD AND TROWEL
But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab
heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Are
you rebelling against the king?” [Nehemiah 2:19]
Whenever the people of God rise up; whenever the Kingdom of God advances, there is sure to be opposition. Saballatt was a Moabite and an enemy of Israel while Tobiah was a Jewish servant and in opposing the building of the wall, stood against his own people.
...who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that
each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other .And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. [Nehemiah 4:17-18]
We must recognize that we are taking ground and this is a battle. The enemy won’t go without a fight. But greater is He that is in you than he that is in this world.
For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. [Nehemiah 4:17-18]
Our weapons are prayer and the word of God. We have the King on our side and we have the authority! We have the letters from the King!
The length of the wall was 4.018 Kilometers with an average height of 12 meters and thickness of 2.5 meters. It contained 34 watchtowers, seven main gates and two minor gates. They completed this in 52 days! The power of shared vision allowed them to create something amazing in 52 days!
The enemy does not want the Kingdom of God to advance. He would rather us talk about vision than actuate vision. This Vision Builders series is more than just a fundraiser; this is about us rising and building and advancing the Kingdom of God against the kingdom of darkness. It’s about us taking the light and love of Jesus into this city and onto university campuses. It’s about lives being saved, people being transformed, faith rising, chains breaking and hope stirring.
The enemy does not want you to support this vision. He would be okay if we would just talk about it. But we have the means to put fuel into the vehicle of vision; to contribute to its momentum.
What would C3 Church Wellington look like in a year if it was up to you?
Our Young Adults leader answered this question about YA. and here is her response:
Dinner Parties Multiplying5 Dinner Parties across Wellington. Through this I see a culture of equipping. Each dinner party leader will be training and equipping the next person to multiply and launch another dinner party
Connectivity to churchEvery single person coming to dinner parties would be plugged in and attending our Sunday services.
DiscipleshipEach young adult is seeking a deeper relationship with God. This looks like talking about the things of God and praying with each other in dinner parties. More focus on a discussion around Sunday’s message, being intentional and structured about follow up (each person will be followed up in person at least monthly)
Worship ServicesOnce a month all-in relevant and engaging worship services. Guest speakers, community people, relevant for Christians and non-Christians alike. 50+ Young Adults regularly attending.
OutreachFruit that leads to overflow. Having a regular spot in the city to engage the coffee card. In a year I want to see a team who does a weekly/bi-weekly spot of putting it on campus and giving out coffee and promoting Jesus. I see a team of 4-5 people rostered on who are passionate about outreach and talking to people about who we are and who Jesus is.
Who wants to get behind that vision?!
Vision Builders 2018
Our vision for this year includes:
The Coffee CartWe need to set this up so that we can get out there! We will need a coffee machine, signage, a generator and more!
CambodiaWe are wanting to partner with the C3 Churches in Cambodia to support and empower them to build their community and the kingdom of God there.
Permanent Hutt LocationWe are looking to secure a permanent venue in the Hutt as a home base for our church and to eliminate the need for pack-in and pack-out at both locations. Ps Michael Maiden gave us the prophecy “It’s going to happen so quickly that you’re going to skip over buildings, so wherever you’re at now, skip the second one and go to the third one because it’s going to be bigger. So God’s going to really help you in every regard to this.”
