CODE 4: We Take a Step

We finished with week four of our series, CODE, at C3 Church Wellington. The series CODE is all about the DNA of C3 Church Wellington – who we are, who we want to be, and the culture we want to cultivate as a people.

If you weren't able to make it on Sunday, let's recap it, because we really don't want you to miss out!

Code four: We take a step.

Then Jesus came close to them and said, “All the authority of the universe has been given to me. Now go in my authority and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And teach them to faithfully follow all that I have commanded you. And never forget that I am with you every day, even to the completion of this age.” [Matthew 28:18-20]

The last code of C3 Wellington is all about ‘discipleship’. We don’t want people to simply show up to church, we want people to go on and become committed followers of Jesus. We are intentional about walking together and helping people discover their purpose and identity in Christ.

Discipleship can be a word that is only used in the Christian circles, so another word for discipleship is followership. Followership is defined as ‘the capacity or willingness to follow a leader’. In Matthew 28:20 Jesus says, “Teach them to faithfully follow”. We are called to learn the teachings of Jesus and then also live them and teach them to others.

We, C3 Church Wellington, believe that discipleship has such a significance in church today. We believe that discipleship is upstream of purpose. When we do life together, we will see the purpose God has for people unlocked and unleashed in their lives. Purpose flows from a person who is in relationship with Jesus; discipleship prepares you for your purpose.

Jesus said to all of his followers, “If you truly desire to be my disciple, you must disown your life completely, embrace my ‘cross’ as your own, nd surrender to my way. For if you choose self-sacrifice, giving up your lives for my glory, you will embark on a discovery of more and more of true life. But if you choose to keep your lives for yourselves, you will lose what you try to keep."  [Luke 9:23-24]

We, C3 Church Wellington, believe that Jesus is very specific about what it takes to unlock purpose and unleash it in our own lives: We must lay down our life and surrender to His ways. Sometimes for different reasons it can be quite easy to be deceived as to what or who our own purpose serves but it will be out of relationship with Jesus and discipleship with others. That makes it pretty clear what purpose God has given every individual - a purpose that is God glorifying, self sacrificial, and a means to someone else’s end. Our purpose as individuals is to make disciples, who make disciples.

“We take a step” - What does it mean? It is pretty simple! To follow Jesus is to imply movement. It may look different in whatever season you’re in but we never want to stand still in our followership of Jesus. When you are standing still, you are not moving. We always want to take a step to follow Jesus.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. [1 Corinthians 9:24]

At C3 Church Wellington, we are passionate about following Jesus and inviting others to follow Jesus too. We will always ask ourselves two questions, “What is my next step? & “What’s their next step?”.

Follow me as I follow Christ. [1 Corinthians 11:1]

In everything we do at C3 Church Wellington, we want to be stepping other people closer to Jesus. Our goal is spiritual growth for every individual and from that growth there will be evident fruitfulness.

How do we achieve people stepping closer to Jesus and growth through discipleship? Easy. We keep church simple. The best way to describe the church we don’t want is to think of your computer desktop. No one can stand a desktop with hundreds of icons and folders that are displayed everywhere without order, right? It is the same with church. We don’t want to do church that is complex, busy and unbelievably chaotic. Complexity is the enemy of growth.

In the early church of Acts 2, many things took place but there was definitely no complexity in how church first began. There was no program but instead they gathered together, they ate together, they prayed together, they worshipped together, and they learned together. There was a lot of togethers; there was discipleship.

Discipleship is simple. Let’s do life together and encourage each other to take the next step. It is organic, inclusive, it’s joyful, and it is life giving. Jesus did it this way and let’s be honest, He came out with some pretty great results.

We, C3 Church Wellington, will be a church that does life together, encourages each other, supports one another in their purpose, and we will be a church that makes disciples who make disciples. We choose to take a step.
